योगश्चित्तवृत्तिनिरोधः॥
yogaś citta-vṛtti-nirodhaḥ

Yoga is the stilling of the fluctuations of the mind. A mat engraved with that stillness, cut from cork grown to be still itself.

KALPAA cork yoga mat, engraved with a lotus mandala and Sanskrit mantra
The idea

A home practice deserves the same reverence as a temple floor.

Most mats are made to be forgotten the moment you step onto them — foam underfoot, a logo in the corner, nothing asked of you. KALPAA is built the opposite way. Every mat carries the line that opens the Yoga Sūtras, burned into cork that took a tree a decade to grow back.

It isn't decoration. It's a reminder, set exactly where your eyes land in child's pose — that the practice was never about the pose. It was always about the mind settling, the way sediment settles in still water.

We make these mats slowly, in small batches, for people who've stopped buying yoga equipment and started building a practice.

Craftsmanship

Two materials, one purpose: a surface that holds you as well when you're soaked in sweat as when you're perfectly still.

Cork, 0.5mm

Harvested, not cut down

Our cork is stripped by hand from living oak — the tree is never felled — then laser-engraved with the mandala and mantra so the artwork is burned into the material itself, not printed on top of it.

Rubber base, 3.5mm

Built for the floor beneath you

A dense natural-rubber core anchors the mat wherever you practice — hardwood, tile, studio floor — and won't compress into a permanent dent under a decade of daily use.

Tested, documented

Nothing you can't verify

REACH, CA65, phthalate and formamide compliant, with lab reports available on request — because "eco-friendly" should be provable, not just printed on a hangtag.

Odorless, by design

Absorbs sweat, holds no smell

Cork's cell structure pulls moisture in rather than letting it sit on the surface, so the mat that gets damp on Monday doesn't greet you with an odor on Tuesday — no spray, no airing out required.

The mat

The Kalpaa Mat

72" × 24", 4mm profile. Natural cork face, charcoal natural-rubber base. Engraved, not printed — the mandala and mantra are burned into the cork itself, so the mark ages the way the mat does: slowly, and only more visibly with use.

Living with it
First weeks

It breaks in, not down

Cork grips better as it meets moisture. Expect the surface to feel slightly different — and noticeably surer underfoot — after your first few sweat-soaked sessions.

Daily care

Wipe, don't soak

A damp cloth after practice is enough. Let it air dry unrolled. No mat spray needed — cork is naturally antimicrobial and won't hold onto odor the way foam does.

Years from now

It marks like a journal

Cork darkens subtly where your hands and feet return most often — a quiet record of where your practice actually happens.

"I stopped needing a teacher to remind me why I was on the mat. It's the first thing I see when I fold forward."
— Early KALPAA practitioner, Los Angeles
